The centre is ten minutes drive from the town of Tarifa. The old part of the town has cafés, bars and restaurants: perfect for lazy afternoons chatting with friends, or wild evenings bar hopping. Outside the town are beautiful beaches (among the world's top 10 beaches, according to Condé Nast Traveller), famous for wind surfing and kite surfing.
A short walk from the centre, and you can be in the Alcornocales national park. An ancient cork forest, it is full of rare fauna and flora, rocks and rivers. A place of outstanding beauty.
Algeciras is the busiest port in Spain, and most of it is a working city rather than tourist attraction. However, it does have a pretty central square with a traditional tilework fountain and cafés.
About 45 minutes drive from the centre, Gibraltar is a popular destination. Famous for its apes and duty free shopping, it also has an impressive botanical gardens, caves, and a nature reserve.
For the more adventurous, you can hop on a ferry in Tarifa and be in Tangiers in about half an hour. A bustling city with a fascinating historic centre. For first time visitors, it is probably worth getting the guided tour (arranged as part of the ferry crossing), to make sure you get to pack in as much as you can in a day.
